You installed an under-sink RO purifier in your Lekki flat or Abuja duplex, the technician left, and now the water only trickles out. Before you blame the purifier, look at what is feeding it. In many Nigerian homes, especially flats and multi-storey buildings that depend on an overhead tank, weak water pressure is the real culprit. Here is why it happens, how to confirm it, and what actually fixes it.
Reverse osmosis works by pushing water through a very fine semi-permeable membrane, and that takes pressure. When the incoming pressure is too low, less water passes through the membrane, the purifier produces slowly, and overall performance suffers. Many under-sink RO systems are designed to run best at around 40 to 60 psi (roughly 3 to 4 bar), so always check the pressure specification of the model you are buying.
Gravity-fed water gains only about 0.1 bar for every metre of height. A tank sitting three metres above your kitchen tap delivers roughly 0.3 bar, far below what an RO membrane prefers. Tanks on a low roof, or on the same level as the kitchen in a duplex, are the most common cause.
Long pipe runs, narrow pipes, half-closed valves, and rust or scale inside old plumbing all cut flow. If the kitchen cold tap itself runs weakly, the purifier will struggle too.
The sediment cartridge is the first line of defence. After the rains, silt and rust can clog it quickly, and a blocked cartridge starves the rest of the system. Our guide to maintaining your water purifier explains replacement timing.
A tired borehole pump, a weak booster pump, or voltage dips when light goes and you switch to a generator or inverter can all reduce the pressure reaching your kitchen.
In estates and apartment blocks with a shared tank or reticulation, pressure often drops when everyone is bathing and cooking in the morning and evening.
A booster pump raises the pressure at the purifier inlet. It should be matched to the system's requirements and fitted by a technician, because the wrong pump can stress fittings and connections.
Moving the tank higher helps, but it is often impractical on an existing building. A pressure pump set drawing from the tank is a common alternative in Nigerian homes.
Replace overdue cartridges and flush the supply line. Sometimes this alone brings the flow back to normal.
The opposite problem also exists. Direct pump lines can deliver pressure well above what the purifier is rated for, which stresses seals and fittings. A pressure regulator protects the system.
Buying first and discovering the pressure problem later is expensive. An iClear home assessment looks at your water source, tank height, plumbing route and available pressure before recommending a system, so the installation fits your home. iClear under-sink systems are priced at ₦450,000 (Standard) and ₦650,000 (Premier), are SGS and CE certified and qualified by the Kenya Water Institute, and come with 24/7 service and plumber dispatch within 24 hours. See what space and setup to expect in our guide to under-sink RO installation in Lagos kitchens, and read the power requirement guide for inverters and generators if backup power is part of your pressure story.

Q: Can low water pressure affect an RO purifier?
A: Yes. RO membranes need suitable feed pressure to operate efficiently, so weak pressure can reduce production and affect performance.
Q: Why is my under-sink RO purifier producing water slowly?
A: Possible causes include low inlet pressure, clogged pre-filters, a restricted water line or a membrane that needs servicing.
Q: Does an RO purifier need a booster pump?
A: Some installations do, particularly where incoming pressure is too low for the system's operating requirements.
Q: Can an overhead tank provide enough pressure for RO?
A: It depends on the tank height, the plumbing layout and the purifier's pressure requirements. Water gains only about 0.1 bar per metre of height.
Q: Can high pressure also damage a water purifier?
A: Yes. Excessive pressure can stress components, which is why a pressure regulator may be needed in some installations.
Q: Can iClear assess my home's water setup before installation?
A: Yes. An iClear home assessment evaluates your water source, plumbing arrangement and pressure conditions before recommending a system.
