# Why Does My Purified Water Taste Different? Common Causes & Fixes

If your purified water suddenly tastes different, it does not automatically mean something is wrong with your iClear purifier. Reverse Osmosis (RO) changes the mineral and dissolved-solids profile of water, so purified water can taste different from the water you were previously drinking.

However, a noticeable change in taste can also point to something that needs attention, particularly after installation or when filters are due for replacement. First-use flushing, filter maintenance, storage conditions and changes in your incoming water can all affect how your purified water tastes.

#### **Why Does Purified Water Taste Different?**

One of the simplest explanations is that purification changes the composition of the water.

RO purification reduces dissolved salts, minerals and other unwanted substances. As a result, the finished water may have a lighter or different taste compared with untreated water, bottled water or water from your previous source.

Slightly different pH and mineral levels can influence how water tastes without the taste itself indicating that something is wrong.

So if you have recently started using an RO purifier, a different taste can simply be part of the change from your previous water source.

#### **Why Does New RO Water Taste Strange After Installation?**

Newly installed purification systems may need to be flushed according to the manufacturer's installation procedure before normal drinking use.

If your iClear purifier has just been installed and the water tastes unusual, check that the required initial flushing has been completed. If you are unsure about the procedure, [contact iClear](https://geticlear.com/contact-us) support rather than guessing.

iClear provides support for installation, usage and purifier questions, so persistent taste issues can be checked with the appropriate team.

#### **Can Old Filters Change the Taste?**

Yes. Filter condition can have a noticeable effect on the taste and smell of purified water.

As filters become saturated or overdue for replacement, their ability to perform their intended filtration can decrease. Activated carbon filtration, in particular, is commonly used to reduce substances that affect taste and odour.

iClear recommends changing its purifier filters approximately every **6–8 months**, depending on household usage.

If your water tasted normal when the purifier was new but has gradually developed a metallic, bitter or unusual taste, check when the filters were last serviced.

#### **Don't Forget the Storage Tank**

The purifier itself may not always be the source of a taste problem.

If your system uses a storage tank, the tank and surrounding components also need to be kept clean. iClear's maintenance guidance recommends cleaning purifier storage tanks regularly and paying attention to water freshness and storage conditions.

If the purifier has been unused for an extended period, follow the manufacturer's guidance for flushing before returning it to normal use.

#### **Could Your Incoming Water Have Changed?**

Your purifier treats the water coming into your home, so a change in the source water can affect the purification process and the final taste.

Borehole water, tanker water and municipal water can have different mineral, sediment and chemical profiles. If your source has recently changed or you have noticed a new taste, colour or odour before purification, it is worth investigating the incoming water as well.

This is particularly important if the taste change is sudden rather than something you have noticed since first installing the purifier.

#### **What Should You Do If Your iClear Water Tastes Different?**

Start with the simple checks:

1. **Recently installed?** Make sure the required first-use flushing has been completed.
2. **Filters due for replacement?** Check your service date and filter condition.
3. **Storage tank clean?** Inspect and clean the tank and related components as appropriate.
4. **Water source changed?** Consider whether your borehole, tanker or municipal supply has changed.
5. **Taste still unusual?** Contact iClear support for assistance.

You don't necessarily need to replace the purifier simply because the taste has changed. First identify whether the difference is normal for purified water or whether it indicates a maintenance or source-water issue.

#### **Get Help With Your Purified Water**

A different taste does not always mean your purifier has failed. RO purification naturally changes the dissolved-solids and mineral profile of water, but an unusual or sudden change deserves attention.

Keeping your filters, storage components and purifier properly maintained can help you continue getting consistent purified water.

If your iClear water still tastes different after checking these basics, **<https://geticlear.com/contact-us>[contact iClear](https://geticlear.com/contact-us) at +234-708-063-7319 for support.**

#### **FAQs**

**Q: Why does my RO water taste different from bottled water?A:** RO changes the mineral and dissolved-solids profile of water, so its taste can differ from untreated or bottled water.

**Q: Why does new RO water taste strange after installation?A:** New filters and membranes may require flushing according to the manufacturer's installation procedure before normal drinking use.

**Q: Can old filters make purified water taste bad?A:** Yes. Saturated carbon filters, overdue maintenance and contaminated storage components can affect taste and odour.

**Q: Does low TDS always mean better-tasting water?A:** Not necessarily. Taste depends on several factors, including mineral composition, pH, temperature and the condition of the purification system.

**Q: Can a purifier remove chlorine taste?A:** Activated carbon filtration is commonly used to reduce chlorine and associated taste and odour.

**Q: What should I do if my iClear water suddenly tastes different?A:** Check filter-service timing, storage conditions and the incoming water, then contact iClear support if the change persists.
