The rains are easing across Lagos, Ogun, Rivers and Delta, and for many homes the first thing to settle is the road, not the water. But months of heavy rainfall can change what is happening in your borehole, your tank and your pipes, and some of those changes only show up weeks after the last downpour. October is a good month to check. Here is what the rainy season can leave behind, a simple checklist you can run at home this week, and when it is time to test.

#### **Why October is the right time to check your water**

During the rainy season the water table rises, drains overflow and runoff moves across compounds and estates. In low-lying areas of Lagos, Lekki, Ajah, Port Harcourt and parts of Ogun and Delta, floodwater can sit around boreholes, soak-aways and septic tanks for days. When the rain stops, your water does not automatically return to what it was before. October is when you can see the full effect, and it is the best moment to act before the dry season sets in.

#### **What heavy rain can change in your water**

- **Sediment and cloudiness:** Rain stirs up silt, sand and fine clay. Water that was clear in July may now leave a brown film at the bottom of a bucket.
- **Microbial contamination:** Floodwater and surface runoff can carry bacteria into shallow wells and poorly sealed boreholes. You cannot see or smell this, which is why appearance is a poor guide. Our guide to [typhoid and cholera prevention](https://geticlear.com/blog/typhoid-cholera-prevention-water-filtration-nigeria) explains the health side in detail.
- **Changes in taste, smell and minerals:** As groundwater levels rise and fall, the mix of dissolved minerals can shift. Some homes notice more iron staining, or a metallic or salty taste, after the rains.
- **Dirty storage:** Dust, leaves, insects and sediment collect in overhead and underground tanks, especially where lids do not seal properly.

#### **Your October water checklist**

Run through these seven checks this week. It takes about ten minutes.

1. **Look.** Fill a clear glass and hold it up to the light. Check for cloudiness, floating particles or a yellow or brown tint.
2. **Smell.** Earthy, sulfur (rotten egg) or chemical smells are worth noting.
3. **Taste.** A metallic, salty or flat taste that was not there before is a signal.
4. **Stains.** Reddish-brown marks on tiles, sinks or laundry usually point to iron. White chalky marks suggest hardness.
5. **Tank.** When was it last cleaned? Look for slime, sediment at the bottom, a loose lid or unscreened vents.
6. **Taps and pipes.** Check for reduced flow, particles caught in tap aerators or blocked showerheads.
7. **Surroundings.** Look at the borehole head, casing and nearby drains, soak-aways and septic tanks. Standing water or cracks near the borehole deserve attention.

If any of these changed since the start of the rainy season, test your water. If none did, test anyway. The contaminants that matter most are often the ones you cannot see.

#### **Do not forget the overhead tank**

Even good borehole water can pick up dirt in a neglected tank. A clean tank protects the water you have already paid to pump and store, but it does not remove dissolved salts, metals or microorganisms already in the incoming water. Tank cleaning and water purification solve different problems, and most homes need both.

#### **Can a sediment filter fix muddy water?**

A sediment filter can reduce suspended particles, so it helps when the problem is visible mud, sand or silt. It will not remove dissolved salts, heavy metals or microorganisms, and clear water is not automatically safe. If your water turned muddy after the rains, our guide on [cloudy and muddy borehole water after heavy rainfall](https://geticlear.com/blog/cloudy-muddy-borehole-water-after-rain-nigeria) walks through that case step by step.

#### **Why testing beats guessing**

A proper home test shows you the numbers that decide which treatment you actually need: Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), pH, iron, hardness, colour, turbidity and odour. Read [how a home water test works](https://geticlear.com/blog/test-borehole-water-quality-home-lagos-abuja) if you want to know what to expect on the day. One honest note: an on-site test covers physical and chemical readings. If you suspect bacterial contamination after flooding, treat the water as unsafe to drink until it has been properly treated, and ask about laboratory testing as well.

#### **What to do if your water has changed**

- Stop judging your water by appearance alone.
- Boil water for drinking in the meantime. Boiling helps with germs but does not remove dissolved salts, heavy metals or chemical contaminants.
- Have the tank cleaned and make sure the lid seals properly.
- Test the water.
- Choose treatment based on the results, not on assumptions.

#### **How iClear can help**

iClear offers a free home water test. A technician visits, takes instant readings and recommends the treatment stages your water actually needs. For drinking water, an under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) purifier reduces dissolved salts, many heavy metals and many microorganisms. The iClear Standard purifier is ₦450,000 and the Premier is ₦650,000. iClear systems are SGS and CE certified and qualified by the Kenya Water Institute, each unit purifies roughly 500 litres per unit of electricity, and support runs 24/7 with plumber dispatch within 24 hours.

#### **Frequently Asked Questions**

**Q: Why can borehole water change after heavy rain?
A:** Heavy rainfall can alter groundwater conditions and increase the movement of sediment or contaminants into vulnerable water sources.

**Q: Should I test borehole water after the rainy season?
A:** Testing is useful when water appearance, smell, taste or other conditions change, especially after flooding or heavy rainfall.

**Q: Can a muddy-looking borehole be fixed with a sediment filter?
A:** Sediment filtration can reduce suspended particles, but the full treatment should depend on what the water test shows.

**Q: Can rain contaminate shallow wells and boreholes?
A:** Yes. Floodwater and surface runoff can introduce microbial and other contaminants into vulnerable water sources.

**Q: Is clear water automatically safe after flooding?
A:** No. Microbial and dissolved contamination can be invisible.

**Q: What should homeowners do if their water suddenly changes?
A:** Stop assuming it is safe based on appearance, test the water and select treatment based on the results. iClear offers a free home water test on +234-708-063-7319.
