Boiling water before drinking it is a habit most Nigerian households grew up with, and for good reason it's cheap, familiar, and works against a real threat. But "it works" and "it solves the whole problem" are different claims. Here's exactly what boiling handles, what it doesn't, and where a purifier picks up the rest.

#### **Does Boiling Water Make It Safe to Drink?**

Boiling is effective against many microorganisms when done correctly, but it does not remove dissolved salts, many heavy metals or other chemical contaminants. "Done correctly" matters here — a rolling boil sustained long enough to work, not a quick heat-up that's pulled off the stove early. Even done right, boiling only ever addresses one category of problem: living organisms in the water. It was never built to deal with anything dissolved in it.

#### **Is Boiling Enough for Salty Borehole Water?**

No. Boiling does not desalinate water and can concentrate dissolved substances as water evaporates. This surprises a lot of people boiling a pot of salty water doesn't remove the salt, it removes the water around the salt, which means what's left behind is often more concentrated than what you started with, not less.

#### **Can Boiling Remove Iron From Borehole Water?**

Boiling is not a practical iron-removal treatment for household borehole water. Iron staining on sinks, tubs, or laundry is a dissolved-metal problem, not a microbial one, which puts it firmly outside what boiling was ever designed to fix.

#### **Does a Water Purifier Replace Boiling?**

It depends on the purifier and the contaminants involved. A properly designed purification system can address contaminants that boiling cannot. An RO system, for instance, physically blocks dissolved salts and many heavy metals by membrane pore size a different mechanism entirely from boiling's heat-based approach, which is why it covers ground boiling never could.

#### **Is RO Useful for Nigerian Borehole Water?**

RO is commonly used where borehole water contains dissolved salts, certain metals or other contaminants that basic treatment does not address. Coastal boreholes dealing with saltwater intrusion, or inland boreholes with naturally high mineral content, are common cases where RO does work that boiling and basic filtration simply can't.

#### **When Should You Test Water Instead of Guessing?**

Testing is useful when the source is uncertain, the water changes in appearance or taste, or there is a specific contamination concern. Boiling as a default habit works fine for peace of mind on the microbial side, but it can create a false sense of complete safety — testing is what actually tells you whether there's a dissolved contaminant problem boiling was never going to catch.
