# How to Tell if Your Water Filter Is Working Properly: 10 Warning Signs

Your purifier still switches on and water still comes out of the tap, so surely everything is fine? Not always. A purifier can keep running long after its filters are exhausted, and the contaminants it is meant to handle are usually invisible. Use this checklist to catch problems early, whether you have an iClear unit or any other system.

#### **10 warning signs your water filter needs attention**

1. **Slower flow or less water.** Clogged filters, low inlet pressure, membrane fouling or a pump problem can all reduce output.
2. **A change in taste.** Water that suddenly tastes flat, metallic, salty or stale may point to exhausted carbon, overdue servicing or a change in the incoming water.
3. **A new smell.** Earthy, chemical or sulfur odours can mean a saturated carbon stage or contamination in the storage components.
4. **Cloudy water or visible particles.** If purified water is not clear, something upstream is not doing its job.
5. **Overdue filter replacement.** Water may keep flowing, but filtration performance declines as cartridges clog and exhaust. Follow the manufacturer's schedule.
6. **Leaks or damp under the sink.** Check fittings, housings and tubing for drips, and mop up any dampness around the cabinet.
7. **Unusual noise from the pump.** Grinding, rattling or a pump that struggles to start is worth a technician's attention.
8. **Water running to drain non-stop.** Continuous drain flow when the storage tank is full can point to a valve fault.
9. **Slime or stale water in the storage tank or dispenser.** A dirty tank or spout can spoil good water after it has been purified.
10. **A rising TDS reading.** If you own a TDS meter and your purified water reads higher than it used to, the membrane or pre-filters may need servicing.

One important reminder: clear water does not mean a working purifier. Many dissolved and microbiological contaminants are invisible, so appearance alone cannot confirm that your water is safe.

#### **Check this first: a simple 5-minute sequence**

Before you call for servicing, run through these steps in order. They solve a surprising number of complaints.

1. **Power.** Confirm the plug is firm and the socket is live. Voltage dips from light, generator or inverter changes can stop a pump from starting properly.
2. **Supply.** Open the kitchen cold tap. If it runs weakly, the purifier will too.
3. **Valves.** Make sure the isolation valve under the sink is fully open and no tubing is kinked.
4. **Filter age.** Compare the date of the last replacement with the manufacturer's schedule.
5. **Leaks.** Wipe around the housings and fittings, then check again after an hour.
6. **Storage and spout.** Look for slime or stale water in the tank or dispenser, and clean the outlet.

#### **When to call a technician**

Simple external checks are fine to do yourself, but internal repairs, membrane replacement and electrical work should follow the manufacturer's service guidance. Our guide to the [cost of replacing filter cartridges and RO membranes](https://geticlear.com/blog/water-filter-ro-membrane-replacement-cost-nigeria) shows what routine servicing involves, and our [maintenance guide](https://geticlear.com/blog/how-to-maintain-your-water-purifier-for-long-term-performance) explains how to keep performance steady for the long term.

#### **How iClear supports you after installation**

iClear systems are SGS and CE certified and qualified by the Kenya Water Institute, and iClear backs them with 24/7 service and plumber dispatch within 24 hours. If your water source has changed since you installed, a free home water test can confirm whether your current setup still matches your water. See [how a home water test works](https://geticlear.com/blog/test-borehole-water-quality-home-lagos-abuja).

Call **+234-708-063-7319** or [book a free consultation](https://geticlear.com/schedule-a-free-consultation) if your purifier is showing any of these signs.

#### **Frequently Asked Questions**

**Q: How do I know if my water purifier needs servicing?
A:** Common warning signs include reduced flow, unusual taste or smell, visible particles, leaks, abnormal noise and missed filter-replacement intervals.

**Q: Can a water purifier still work when its filters are overdue?
A:** Water may continue to flow, but filtration performance can decline as filters become exhausted or clogged.

**Q: Why is my purifier producing less water?
A:** Possible causes include clogged filters, low pressure, membrane fouling, pump issues or restrictions in the plumbing.

**Q: Does clear water mean the purifier is working?
A:** No. Many dissolved and microbiological contaminants are invisible, so appearance alone cannot confirm water safety.

**Q: How often should RO filters be replaced?
A:** Replacement timing varies by filter type, source-water quality and usage. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule.

**Q: Should I repair a purifier myself?
A:** Simple external checks may be safe, but internal repairs and membrane or electrical work should be handled according to the manufacturer's service guidance.
