Homes across GRA, Trans Amadi and Ada George deal with this regularly. Here is what causes the smell, why it matters for your health, and how to get rid of it for good. #### **Why does borehole water in Port Harcourt smell like rotten eggs?** The rotten-egg smell comes from hydrogen sulfide gas, produced by sulfur-reducing bacteria in low-oxygen underground water. Rivers State's water table is a common setting for it. The smell is unpleasant on its own, but it also signals bacterial activity you do not want in your drinking water. #### **Is smelly borehole water dangerous?** Water heavy with sulfur or bacterial decay can cause stomach upset and skin irritation, and hydrogen sulfide is corrosive to pipes and fittings over time. The smell is a warning sign worth acting on rather than living with. #### **How to remove the smell for good** Masking the odour does not work. Removing it takes two stages working together: - **Activated carbon filtration:** absorbs hydrogen sulfide and the organic compounds behind the smell. - **Reverse Osmosis:** polishes the water and removes the dissolved contaminants a carbon stage leaves behind. The [iClear Standard Purifier](https://geticlear.com/get-water-purifiers-today) combines multi-stage activated carbon with RO, so it absorbs sulfur compounds and delivers water that is clean to drink and free of odour. For heavy cases, a whole-house pre-treatment stage handles the smell at the point of entry before it reaches your taps. #### **What it costs to fix smelly water in Port Harcourt** An under-sink iClear drinking system starts at **₦450,000**, while whole-house odour pre-treatment units start from around ₦150,000 depending on your water and tank setup. iClear delivers, installs and services in Port Harcourt, so support does not stop at the sale. You can see the full range on our [products page](https://geticlear.com/get-water-purifiers-today). #### **Get your water tested first** Before buying anything, book a free water test so the fix matches your actual water. Call **+234-708-063-7319** or [reach out here](https://geticlear.com/contact-us) to arrange a visit in Port Harcourt. #### **Frequently Asked Questions** **Q: Why does borehole water in Port Harcourt smell like rotten eggs?
