# Can You Drink Borehole Water After Filtering? What Basic Filters Actually Remove

[iClear](https://geticlear.com/blog/author/iclear)

Many homes and estates in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun and Port Harcourt have a filter sitting on the borehole line. The water comes out clear, so everyone assumes it is ready to drink. Sometimes it is not. A filter and a purifier are not the same thing, and the difference matters for your family. Here is what basic filters actually remove, what they leave behind, and how to decide what your borehole water needs.

#### **Filtering is not the same as purifying**

Filtering usually means catching physical particles. Purifying means treating the water for the contaminants that can affect what you drink, including dissolved salts, certain metals and microorganisms. Clear water can still carry things you cannot see, so appearance alone cannot tell you whether it is safe.

#### **What common filters do, and what they miss**

| **Filter type** | **Good for** | **Does not handle** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Sediment or candle filter | Sand, silt, rust particles and visible cloudiness | Dissolved salts, heavy metals, dissolved chemicals, reliable germ removal |
| Activated carbon | Chlorine, bad taste, odour and some organic compounds | Dissolved salts, hardness and many metals |
| UV light | Inactivating bacteria and viruses in clear water | Salts, hardness, metals and chemicals; muddy water can shield microbes |
| RO membrane | Dissolved salts, hardness minerals, many heavy metals, many microorganisms, taste | Works best with proper pre-filtration and regular servicing |

#### **Four things basic filters commonly miss**

- **Dissolved salt:** A sediment filter cannot desalinate water, and neither can carbon. Coastal and island boreholes often carry high Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) that look and feel normal in the glass.
- **Heavy metals:** Removal depends on technology designed and validated for the specific contaminant. A basic filter is not that.
- **Hardness:** Calcium and magnesium pass straight through sediment and carbon stages, which is why kettles and taps still scale up after filtering.
- **Microorganisms:** Bacteria are too small for a sediment stage to catch reliably, and floodwater can push them into vulnerable boreholes.

#### **What about iron, smell and taste?**

Particulate iron that has already turned your water brown can be reduced by sediment filtration, but dissolved iron is trickier and often needs dedicated pre-treatment. Sulfur smell and chlorine taste respond to carbon. Each problem needs the right stage, which is why a one-filter-fits-all approach rarely works. Our guide on [brownish and iron-stained borehole water in Lekki and Ajah](https://geticlear.com/blog/treat-iron-borehole-water-lekki-ajah) covers the iron case in detail.

#### **Test first, then choose**

Testing identifies the water characteristics that decide which stages you need: TDS, pH, iron, hardness, colour, turbidity and odour. Without it you are guessing. Read [how a home water test works](https://geticlear.com/blog/test-borehole-water-quality-home-lagos-abuja) before you spend on any equipment.

#### **What is commonly used for difficult borehole water**

For borehole water with dissolved salts, certain metals or other contaminants that basic filters do not address, RO is commonly considered, usually with sediment and carbon stages ahead of the membrane. iClear's under-sink systems follow this multi-stage approach and are priced at ₦450,000 (Standard) and ₦650,000 (Premier). They are SGS and CE certified and qualified by the Kenya Water Institute, and each unit purifies roughly 500 litres per unit of electricity. #### **Frequently Asked Questions**

**Q: Can filtered borehole water be safe to drink?
A:** It depends on what the filter removes and what contaminants are present. A basic sediment filter is not equivalent to a complete drinking-water treatment system.

**Q: What does a sediment filter remove from borehole water?
A:** It primarily captures suspended particles such as sand, silt and other physical debris.

**Q: Can a carbon filter remove salt from borehole water?
A:** No. Activated carbon is not designed to desalinate water.

**Q: Does a basic filter remove heavy metals?
A:** Not necessarily. The filter technology must specifically be designed and validated for the contaminant involved.

**Q: Why should borehole water be tested before choosing a purifier?
A:** Testing identifies the water characteristics that determine which treatment stages are appropriate.

**Q: What type of purifier is commonly used for difficult borehole water?
A:** RO is commonly considered when borehole water contains dissolved salts, certain metals or other contaminants that basic filters do not address.
